Surf & Turf wins the WMYC Centenary Regatta 2010.
The regatta was run over two days with three races all to count. Saturday saw 9 IRC yachts on the line in a mixed day of low cloud, rain and varying strengths of southerly wind. Saturday's races were windward / leeward sttyle but using a zigzag course in the estuary, and with the occaisional 25knots of wind, the first casualty was the J80 "White Lightning" who retired with a broken forestay. Eight yachts finished the race with line honours and overall win going to "Thrust".
"Billy Wizz" decided conditions were not to their liking and retired so 7 yachts started the afternoon race. By now the wind speed had generally increased but the race finished prior to the onset of heavy rain. Line homours went again to "Thrust" but on corrected time the winner was "Surf & Turf".
Sunday morning was a much brigher day, with a reasonable amount of sunshine but also an increase in wind speed which had gone round to NW and by the start was 22/22 knots. "Black Adder" decided that after damage on the previous day they were staying ashore, so 6 yachts started a windward / leeward course. After the second beat "Growler" retired with a broken halyard and the Sonata "Aubie Two" decided the conditions were getting to much. The wind was now a steady 28/30knots, and with gusts of up to and at on point over 40 knots, the rest of the fleet carried on with once again "Thrust" taking line honours on a shortened course. However the fast finishing legs with the incoming tide ensured all 4 yachts finished within 10 mins of each other thus leaving "Scallywag" the corrected time winner.
The final results for the weekend were 1st - "Surf & Turf", 2nd - "Thrust", 3rd - "Scallywag" and 4th "Jalfrezi"
